SEPTEMBER 2011
Introduction
May I introduce myself - I am Colm O’Doherty, now living in Ballina, Co. Tipperary, just across the Shannon from Killaloe in Co. Clare. Over the years I have lived and worked in the North and in the Republic and have studied counselling and psychotherapy in Ireland and in the U.S. I have moved to Ballina after having lived in Wicklow for some years.
My Background
I continue to enjoy working as a psychotherapist and supervisor. I have been in a variety of settings over the last 30 years. I was on the staff of Corrrymeela, a Reconciliation Centre in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim in the late ‘80’s. Then I became Director of Dundalk Counselling Centre in the early ‘90’s and was Director of Training in the Institute of Creative Counselling and Psychotherapy in Dun Laoghaire from 1996 to 2011.
My Work
Therapy
In all these settings I always have had a private practice, working in therapy with individuals, couples and groups. I believe that therapy can enable us to develop our own capacities and to live fuller and more mature adult lives.
I have a particular interest in helping people explore and integrate early, difficult and painful experiences which can inhibit development and relationships.
I can work in a variety of ways, depending on what people most need, from short-term, to more medium and long-term work which can last some months or a few years.
Supervision
Over the years I have built up a strong supervision practice working with a wide range of people, from those doing voluntary work to experienced professionals. I supervise students, both those in training and those who are beginning to enter the profession, as well as long established therapists in different parts of the country.
Training
Having spent years training counsellors and psychotherapists I continue to meet with trainers as consultant to them in their work in both the voluntary sector as well as on professional training courses.
My Accreditation
I have counselling and psychotherapy accreditation from a number of national bodies and also from Europe:
- Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP)
- Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP)
- European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP).
I also have accreditation as supervisor:
- Accredited supervisor with both IAHIP and IACP.

Directions
Approaching Ballina from Birdhill, go through the village of Ballina, with Killaloe and the bridge on your left.
Go straight through the mini-roundabout in the middle of Ballina.
Very soon you pass a Top Garage on your right as the road gently swings to the right, with the GAA pitch and a crèche on your left.
The entrance to Ashgrove Meadows is on your right, the name marked in concrete on a low wall.
If you reach the 80km/h sign, you have gone too far!
Coming into Ashgrove Meadows follow the road around to the right.
After the third traffic bump, and a small green metal ESB sub-station on your left, take the left turn into a small cul de sac of 4 houses.
No. 21 is the last house in the cul de sac and there is parking space just before the entrance to the house.
Approaching Ballina from Portroe/Portumna, for Ashgrove Meadows take the second left after the 50km/h sign.
